Google to allow phone calls from Gmail

Google to allow phone calls from Gmail

Tech giant Google Inc says that Gmail users will now be able to call telephones directly from their email.

Google already provides computer-to-computer voice and video chat services. But the company said that it is for the first time that they will be allowing calls to home phones and mobile phones directly from Gmail.Google promised free calls to US and Canadian phones from Gmail for the rest of this year and said it would charge low rates for calls made to other countries. For example it said calls to Britain, France, Germany, China and Japan would be as low as two cents per minute.

Gmail user Manish Singh says that he is waiting for that day when Google will extend this service for their Indian subscribers.

Analysts said the service would likely be a bigger competitive threat to services like Skype`s than to traditional phone companies, which have already been cutting their call prices in recent years in response to stiff competition.

"This is a risk to Skype. It`s a competitor with a pretty good brand name," said Hudson Square analyst Todd Rethemeier.

Like Skype, Rethemeier said the Google service will likely be much more popular among US consumers making international calls, than among people calling friends inside the country.

"Calling is so cheap already that I don`t think it will attract a huge amount of domestic calling. It could take some of the international market," he said.

Farmers sieged capital, blocked key roads

Farmers sieged capital, blocked key roads

There seems to be no end to the woes of Delhites as all the major roads leading to Central Delhi, particularly parliament street and Connaught Place, were blocked on Thursday by thousands of belligerent farmers.

They came here to gherao parliament later today to press their demand for better compensation when government acquire their land. The impasse of their large presence has already crippled the traffic in central Delhi.

The traffic movement was affected at Rajghat, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Barakhamba Road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath, Ranjit Singh Marg and Tolstoy Marg. Movement towards the New Delhi railway station through Ajmere Gate was also be affected by traffic jams at Ajmere Gate, Darya Ganj and Chandni Chowk

According to the Delhi and Ghaziabad police sources, around 12,000-14,000 farmers have descended in the national capital, in a bid to protest against the `forceful` acquisition of land for the Yamuna Expressway a dream project of UP chief minister Mayawati.

With the ruling Congress party expressing its support to the `cause`, there was a "considerable presence" of farmers in the capital as expected. Farmers arrived in Delhi

Earlier, Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh has given a nation-wide call to farmers for Parliament gherao with the slogan Sansad ghero, zamin bachao (Ring Parliament, Save Land).

Even as the Uttar Pradesh government is trying to assuage farmers whose land has been acquired for the Yamuna expressway at throwaway prices, Mr Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here to seek his intervention for re-introducing the lapsed land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, 2009, in Parliament.

Earlier this week, the National Democratic Alliance and some other parties also raised a demand in Parliament for re-introduction of the Bill.

Maa Tujhe salaam

Maa Tujhe salaam

As we are remembering Mother Teresa on her centenary, it is high time that we also recall her contribution for humanity. She was a lady of an unmatchable persona and individuality, who earnestly served the humanity and never expected anything in return. She was the Almighty`s envoy who gave her life to defeat abortion and remained committed for her wholehearted service towards the suffering. The work of the immortal is still very much alive and attracting many vocations and volunteers. Mother Teresa was born on August 27, 1910.

Almost 100 years after the birth of Mother Teresa, every day, many people visit her home in Calcutta.

Mother has always offered love and hope to the most disadvantaged. Her life was a combination of simplicity, sacrifice and strength in service to others. Serving the poorest of the poor was the motto of Mother Teresa, the way in which to "quench the thirst of Jesus."

Mother Teresa devoted her life to giving hope to the despairing, covering them with love. As we approach the centenary of her birth, we too, the Missionaries of Charity dedicate ourselves to serving the poorest of the poor to satisfy the thirst ofJesus. We are not social workers.

Today the poor are both those who lack material resources, and those who are poor in spirit. Our mission is to serve both with love. And Mother Teresa was very clear: "It is not the greatness of our actions that is important, but how much love you put into what you do." In our house Asha Dan (Gift of Hope ") in Byculla (central Mumbai), those who are dying each day are collected from the streets and brought to us.

So every the poorest of the poor are given a chance to experience dignity through love. Many have spent many years on the street, others - men and women - are left on the road by their relatives, because they are dying of some terminal illness ... With joy and a smile, we serve them. And this thanks to Mother

Teresa’s teaching. They have suffered a lot, physically and spiritually, of neglect and abysmal poverty, but they die here, immersed in love.

King Khan to perform in Commonwealth Games

King Khan to perform in Commonwealth Games

Amidst all the controversies that has so far dogged the forthcoming commonwealth games, here is a good news that Shahrukh Khan is to perform in the opening ceremony of the games on October 3.

Sources close to Commonwealth games organising committee says that King Khan would give a dance performance in the presence of jam-packed Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. While it is still not known exactly what kind of performace he would give, it is sure that Shahrukh Khan is going to make his presence felt during theopening ceremony.

It may be recalled that Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman has composed the theme song for the games-- Swagatham.

Rahman presented his song to a committee of ministers appointed to oversee the progress of the six-billion-dollar Games organization, which has been plagued by charges of corruption. Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy heads the group, which includes Sports Minister MS Gill and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, among others. Rahman seemed reluctant to reveal much more about the song when journalists asked him to reveal about it.

It’s kind of Waka Waka?” one journalist asked, referring to the song Colombian pop star Shakira sang for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa this year. “Exactly no,” said Mr Rahman.

How to impress your girlfriend’s parents

How to impress your girlfriend’s parents

You are into a serious relationship and you want to make her your life partner. You love her like anything and you can go to any extent for her, but when it comes to asking for her hand from her parents, you feel nervous and find it difficult to gather courage to meet them and asking them “I want to marry your daughter.”

You should learn how to impress your girlfriend’s parents if you are really serious on taking your girl home forever. First impression is the last impression, so you need to work hard on few things.

Homework:

You give importance to your exams and interview, in the same way meeting with her parents is equally important. A day before an exam or interview, you do homework, similarly, do homework in advance for this task too. Prepare a list of sensible questions you can ask her parents and cool answers of some common questions they might ask you.

Impress with your dress:

Groom yourself well before meeting them. Take shower, get a fresh hair cut, trim your nails, shave your beard, dress smartly but casual, make sure that your dress is neat and clean. Remember, looks do matter.

Says Rahul Raj, “I believe looks do matter. I am not saying that you should necessarily be good looking, but you can groom yourself by atleast dressing nicely and neatly. Appearing before your girl`s parents is the first thing, and first impression is the last impression.”

Arrive on time:

This is very important that you reach there on time. They will get annoyed for sure if you keep them waiting.

Be confident:

Confidence is what you need at this moment of time. Be confident, give her dad a firm handshake. Greet her mother, touch her feet or give her a hug.

Make good conversation:

This is the most important factor. If you want to get a green signal from her parents, you need to make a good impressive conversation with them. Talk to them in a friendly manner, maintaining decency and manners. Tell about yourself, talk about your family, work, interests, hobbies etc. Ask them about their likes and dislikes. Be a good listener, and listen carefully to what they talk.

Says Animesh Doloi, 24, who works in an MNC, “These are very delicate matters. You need to be extra careful when you`re meeting with her parents for the first time. When I met with Saloni`s (Animesh`s wife) mom and dad for the first time, I was a bit nervous but I met them with confidence. I had a job in hand, I was earning good, and I was well-behaved while meeting them, what else a girl`s parents need. I got a green signal in the first meeting itself, they were impressed.”

Farewell:

When it`s time for you to leave, be polite and humble. Thanks them for inviting you, tell them that you had an excellent time with them, make them feel that you enjoyed in their company. Give hugs, greetings with a gentle smile on your face.

Well, don`t worry! If you`ll follow all these mantras, you`ll definitely leave a positive impression on her parents. Good luck!

Meryl Streep might be starring opposite him in a new movie

Amitabh Bachchan has acted with just about every leading lady worth working with in Bollywood, and now one of his directors has set his sights on a Hollywood star for him. R Balki, who directed Big B in 'Paa' and 'Cheeni Kum', is said to be looking at multiple Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep to star opposite the B'wood superstar.

The movie is apparently a cross-cultural romance, and so Balki was very keen to get Streep on board. He's believed to have said that it's not really difficult to get a Hollywood star to sign on for a B'wood film, so long as the script is good.

And there's also a B'wood heroine option for Big B if Meryl Streep doesn't work out. It seems that Balki is also considering Sridevi for the part.

Kareena reveals what she loves most about her man

Kareena Kapoor is all praise for her man Saif Ali Khan, with whom she is shooting for director Sriram Raghavan's 'Agent Vinod', and says she is lucky to have him in her life.

"Very few people get love in life and such a supportive partner. Of course, I am very lucky that I have got a partner like Saif. He is a very unique man. His thoughts are much different from others and he always encourages me to work," Kareena said.

She maintains that Saif is like a Hollywood actor, who is ignorant about what's happening around and enjoys his own world.

"Saif is mostly ignorant about what films are in the making or if I have signed any until I tell him about my upcoming projects. He is like a Hollywood actor who stays mostly in his own world. He wants to do certain films and produce movies like Hollywood star," said the actress who teamed up with him in 'Tashan'.

Her chronic shoulder problem is to blame

Vidya Balan's plans of performing a complex Mohiniyattam dance for Santosh Sivan's Malayalam film 'Urumi' have been postponed due to her shoulder condition. The actress says she can't dance until she is fully recovered otherwise she may have a life-long shoulder problem.

"This has happened all because of my own stubbornness," said Vidya whose gym trainer had warned her against rigorous exercises.

"But I didn't listen to him. Now I can't dance until I am fully recovered. I still haven't forgotten the impact of my classical number in 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa'. The one in Santosh's film would be far more sensuous and intricate."

Vidya has a chronic shoulder condition which was aggravated after she insisted on going to the gym before it had healed completely. She has now had a relapse, leading to this excruciating pain.

"Now I have to wait, I've no option. Otherwise I'll have a life-long shoulder problem. I can't wait to start rehearsing for Santosh Sivan's dance number."

Though Vidya is a trained classical dancer, a Mohiniyattam guru has been specially hired by Sivan to teach her nuances of the dance form before she performs it for filming.

Vidya's training was to start this week. Her spirit and her feet are willing -- but the body is too weak to take the vigorous dancing.

"I was in so much pain I couldn't do any of the normal things, let alone dance," she said.

Speaking on the much talked-about item song, she said: "It's more talked-about than actually performed. I was supposed to start preparing for it this week. Unfortunately I've been down with a painful shoulder condition for some time. And completely forbidden from doing anything strenuous."

Vidya describes it as a fusion dance.

"Since I was born in Kerala my family is so looking forward to my foray into Malayalam films. I thought a song is a very good place to start. Moreover, I totally admire Santosh Sivan's work... who doesn't?"

Here's what he got up to during promotions for 'We Are Family'

Shah Rukh Khan's bond with Karan Johar is the stuff of family (They're brothers and more, everyone knows). So it was only natural that SRK wanted to be a part of the promotions for Karan's new movie 'We Are Family'. But some news channels didn't quite see it that way, and here's what the star had to say about that.

"Did interview for We r Family with Arjun & Kareena, cos i feel karan is family. 1 channel said I hijacked interview for my gain. How low? ha ha"

Trust SRK to laugh this off, and also get complimenting his star buddies. He added, "Met 3 beautiful women. Deepika, Kareena & Shahana (Goswami). I get such warm wonderful hugs from them. Still smelling of youth, beauty & talent from hug."

And then there was some philosophy in store, "Wot others say u cant control...wot u make of it, learn, understand, disregard, mull over it & take it out of ur system, is in ur hand & heart."

SRK ended in his usual after-tweet mode, posting, "Think i have vented enough. Anymore & twitter will get choked."

The tattoo of course would show up everytime Deepika tied up her hair and wore something with a low back. Now that she's decided to permanently lose it, it's a sure sign she's moved on.

BPO workers protest stereotyping in the wake of an MMS clip surfacing on the Internet
What makes a sex MMS popular? Those responsible for bringing such video clips in the public domain, market it in the name of popular personalities such as Bollywood actresses (sometimes also lookalikes), sports stars or politicians. The next most saleable victims for them are call centre or BPO employees.

Behind the scenes: Webshots from a sex clip uploaded on the Internet
with the title 'Gurgaon call centre girl'.

Recently such a clip was uploaded on a website with the words 'Gurgaon call centre sex scandal'. It showed a supervisor having sex with his subordinate. In the video, the girl wearing shorts and T-shirt enters a room with things scattered all around. The guy recording her each move is right behind her.

The girl is asked to lie down and then blind folded. Later she is asked to strip slowly. While she undresses, the guy shooting her with his camera, probably a handy cam, zooms in and out focusing on her private parts. After she strips completely, the guy puts the camera on a tripod in such a position that each and every intimate moment is captured.

However, the BPO workers have expressed their outrage at being stereotyped as 'loose' or 'available'. Sohrab Khan, who works with a BPO in Gurgaon, said, "It is common belief that call center employees, mostly in early twenties, get intimate while working late night shifts. But this is not true. Now most of the companies have started monitoring their employee activities at night. Companies also take disciplinary actions. Mostly, they fire those employees who engage in such activities at work."

"Just because I work for a call centre doesn't mean I am available. There are days and night shifts everywhere and those employed are also young professionals. Every company has one or two such cases. But it wouldn't be wise to label all BPO employees as those with loose morals," said Ritika, another employee working with a top BPO company in Gurgaon.

In a recent joint Reuters/Ipsos global survey of about 12,000 people in 24 countries, it was found that workers in India were the mostly likely to report sexual harassment with a report rate of 26 percent. They were followed by workers in China with 18 percent reporting sexual harassment, Saudi Arabia 16 percent, Mexico 13 percent and South Africa 10 percent.

The poll also found that 7 per cent of employees have been intentionally physically assaulted out of anger by a co-worker or manager during their workday. India again topped the table with 25 percent of workers saying they had been assaulted at work. Sweden was once again at the bottom with only one percent reporting such an incident.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Dr. Sanjay Chugh, a well-known psychiatrist explains why the profession is being stereotyped as risqu ©.

"There is a common belief that the sex epidemic in India especially among call center girls and guys is rising at astronomical heights. The reason behind this is those working in these sectors are young with a lot of disposable incomes.

They don't have any liability and have a different living style which fascinates many. So whenever this term is used, it immediately catches the attention of many people. But not all MMS could be associated with some high profile people. So this term is used to create maximum impact."

78 years without water

92-year-old has 'miraculously' survived without a single drop since she was 14

Could a woman who claims to have had no water for the last 78 years hold the solution to manage water shortage better? Unlikely, but what could be only termed as a miracle unless medical science proves otherwise, 92-year old Narasamma from Hanamant Nagar has been doing just that.

Narasamma told MiD DAY, "I haven't had water since childhood. Even today, I don't feel the need for it, and my body has always responded well. I only have coffee twice a day.

Since the last 78 years, Narasamma has never met doctors. In case she falls sick, she relies on Ayurvedic medicines. Also, she fasts for at least 10 days a month.

Maybe, it's unbelievable for a lot of people, but this is how I have been living. Until now, only my family members have known about it. I never talked about it because then doctors and researchers will start investigating me, and I will be an object of scrutiny for everyone, which I don't want."

It was not always like this. In 1932, when Narasamma was 14, she developed a peculiar problem. Her throat would go dry, and she would feel thirstier than ever. In order to combat that, she started to have large quantities of water, sometimes up to 10 litres. This continued for two months.

Too much of water

But then, she developed a new ailment. The excessive water bloated her body, resulting in swelling of limbs. At one point, Narasamma had no control over her limbs. Her condition became worse, and her parents took her to Ayurvedic doctors.

At first, the doctors said that she will not live long, but after her parents appealed, they agreed to try harder. They suggested a 48-day steam therapy. They would put medical herbs in boiling water, and ask her to sit in front of it. Gradually, the accumulated water got out in the form of sweat, and she became better. But after the same ailment struck again, , she vowed never to have water again.

Since the last 78 years, she has never met doctors. In case she falls sick, she relies on Ayurvedic medicines. The reason not to take allopathic medicines, she says, is that they require more water. In the summers, she wears wet clothes to beat the heat, and maintain the water level in her body.

When asked how she remains active, Narasamma said that she eats dry fruits, and nuts throughout the day. For food, she prefers to have rice meals, which she cooks for herself. She gets up at 7 am everyday, washes her clothes, and prays for five hours a day. She also fasts for at least 10 days a month.

This is not all. In 2000, she went on a 36-day tour to North India and South India, but didn't have any food ” she sipped only three cups of coffee throughout the tour.

Now, she wants to fly Singapore, where her grandson lives.

Aruna A, her youngest grand daughter, a TCS employee said, "I have never seen her drinking water. She never asks for it too. She doesn't even sip juice and buttermilk but she is still very strong and healthy."

'It's impossible'

Dr Kirankumar B, general practitioner said, "It is impossible. Every cell needs sufficient water, otherwise the cells won't survive; but in exceptional cases, cells will get water from other options. This is a challenge to the science; we have to examine the person."

Other cases

In May, it was reported that Pralhad Jani, a yogi, has not had food or water for 70 years. He is now 82-years-old and quite healthy.

Although the claim for not eating or drinking for 70 years was unsubstantiated, he was kept in a hospital to study how he could do that.

He stayed in the hospital for eight days without touching water or food, and was in great health.

Her profile has risen somewhat since it emerged that boyfriend Ronaldo has become the father of a baby boy. The soccer star made the extraordinary announcement on his Facebook page last month, and confirmed he would bring up the child without the unnamed mother.

It is unclear how much Irina will be involved with the child, and she has not commented publicly on the affair.

Liz Hurley reveals her controversial diet secret... skipping breakfast

She has a figure that inspires envy in women half her age.

But Liz Hurley has infuriated dietitians by revealing that to keep herself looking slim she almost skips breakfast entirely.

Her morning routine consists of mugs of hot water, an occasional espresso followed by a mid-morning snack of oat cakes.

Bikini body: Liz Hurley, pictured showing off her stunning figure, admits she skips breakfast

Even though it is widely accepted that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the advice from Hurley, 45, is not to bother.

The actress has a long history of bizarre diets and after giving birth to son Hurley in 2002 she famously holed up in Elton John’s house, eating nothing but oat cakes until she lost all her baby weight.

Pre-pregnancy she indulged in a watercress-soup diet which its proponents say can help you lose 10lbs in seven days.

Hurley divulged details of her dramatic diet on her Twitter page following a recent holiday on a yacht in the South of France.

She wrote: ‘My diet survived the onslaught of phenomenal vacation food-doctors disagree, but I swear by almost nothing for breakfast for adults.

Looking good: Hurley resists temptation as her son Damian tucks into an ice cream in St Tropez last week

‘Mugs of hot water first thing, maybe an espresso and a few oat cakes mid morning.’

Earlier she had tweeted: ‘Another workout in the gym with the Australian and an awful lot of hot water. Sick of it now.’

Leading nutritionist Carina Norris said porridge with fruit and nuts cut on top and a glass of juice would be a far more healthy alternative for those wanting to maintain a healthy figure or lose weight.

She said: ‘If you think that some hot water and a coffee is all you need to look like Liz Hurley, then I’m afraid you are wrong.

‘This is not the breakfast that I would recommend to people with regular lives. First thing in the morning your body has not had any food or fuel all night and needs something to kick-start your day.

‘The coffee will give you a kick but you will be relying on your body’s reserves and by mid-morning you would be more likely to snack on something unhealthy like a muffin.’

Hurley, who is married to Indian textile heir Arun Nayar, previously revealed she was down to just one meal a day whilst trying to lose her baby fat with the occasional snack of six raisins.

‘The only meal I have is dinner. I'm on a good old-fashioned low-cal diet. I'm going to bed hungry,’ she said.

She confessed that her diet got her depressed when she thought she was ‘thin again’, only to discover she was 25lbs over target.

Pre-pregnancy, she was so enamoured with the watercress soup diet that she admitted to serving bowls of the green stuff at dinner parties.

‘It's fatless, low-calorie and I drink at least six cups a day when eager to lose pounds,’ she said.

Want to see Mum? Book a 15-minute slot in her diary - what it's really like being Madonna's child

With an expression of pure bliss, Mercy, the five-y ear-old girl adopted by Madonna from Malawi last year, turns up her face to receive a kiss from her Mama.

David, who was also adopted from Malawi in 2006, is in such a scramble to get a kiss, too, that his hat falls off. Have there ever been more delightful pictures of Madonna?

Seeing her snatch moments of affection with her two Malawian children on a street in London this week, you can't help but observe that the flame of maternal love burns brightly for the Material Girl.

Tender moment: Madonna gives adopted daughter Mercy a kiss as she visits her on her latest film set

Tender moment: Madonna gives adopted daughter Mercy a kiss as she visits her on her latest film set

So has Madonna suddenly gone all domestic on us? Well, as ever with Madonna, there is more to this that meets the eye. She is currently directing the movie W.E. and the children were visiting her on-set, where they interrupted her for only a brief moment.

After that, they were taken back home by Madonna's eldest child Lola, 13, Lola's father Carlos Leon, and a nanny, while Madonna got back to work.

Indeed, having a mother who is an international icon and 'hard-assed businesswoman' as she puts it, is a very particular circumstance.

Madonna apparently manages her diary in 15-minute increments. I'm told that she will have 'time with Lola' or 'time with David' marked into her schedule by one of her PAs.

The children are said to have appointments made to see their mother, who will help with homework, or sing, or even make food with them - but only if it has been planned in advance.

Madonna is well known for her inflexibility and her narcissistic focus. We should not be too surprised that this makes it impossible for her to be entirely involved in the domestic routine of raising a family.

'Madonna's version of motherhood is conducted on her own terms'

For most of the day she is busy taking meetings and managing her enormous fortune - she's worth well over £230 million - and likes to keep a track of her investments.

She has other non-negotiable appointments. For example, she works out for two or three hours a day, every day.

'There are no short cuts to being Madonna,' she likes to declare. 'It's all about hard work.'

Madonna and her daughter Lourdes

Karma: The singer said she always knew she would have a daughter after Lourdes was born

Neither will she consider skipping her Friday night Kabbalah meetings, and all her children are expected to attend. These meetings are not much of a family bonding experience as Madonna mainly just sits and concentrates.

At present there are three nannies who look after the children on a rota and play a large and important role in the children's lives. The nannies all speak French, as the children are being raised in a bilingual environment and do not have TVs in their rooms.

The children benefit from a readymade stable of playmates among the bodyguards, drivers assistants and other household staff who travel the globe with Madonna.

There are also two macrobiotic chefs who cook for everyone. There is no red meat, pork or refined sugars. Dairy products are very strictly limited - although Madonna is not such a zealot that the children don't get ice cream or cake on their birthdays.

It may not be conventional, but that Madonna adores her children with all her heart is beyond question. She adopted David Banda after trying for four difficult years to present Guy Ritchie with another child, and was said to have tried various fertililty treatments - conventional and through Kabbalah.

After her split from Ritchie she still found that she ached for another child, even though by this stage she is thought to have been going through the menopause. She fought for nearly a year to get her adoption of Mercy through the courts.

'There was a period when it seems that Madonna used abortion pretty much as a method of birth control'

Madonna turned 52 this month and her friend Rosie O'Donnell let slip last year that the singer had been advising her on the use of progesterone cream to treat the hot flushes and other symptoms of the change. 'She was like - just get the cream,' said O'Donnell.

Madonna's version of motherhood is conducted on her own terms. She only desired children at an age where it was difficult for her to bear them - she fell pregnant with Rocco at 41 and suffered a traumatic birth when her placenta became partly detached.

Objections - such as the legal status of adoption in Malawi, or the feelings of the fathers of both children - have not stopped her. You wonder if, given this struggle, she ever pauses to consider the babies which she didn't bear, too.

For Madonna has in the past admitted to having had 'several' abortions as a young woman.

'Several sounds so many,' she told a television journalist in 1994, sounding chastened. The irony is that she spent her childbearing years not having children, and is finally embracing motherhood in her 50s.

Author Barbara Victor, who wrote a 2001 biography of the star, alleges that Madonna has had as many as 11 terminations since she was 18, most of them when she was a young singer and dancer struggling to make it in New York.

Victor says: 'There was a period when she was a struggling nobody, when it seems that Madonna used abortion pretty much as a method of birth control.'

Madonna's camp have never commented on the abortion stories, beyond denying that the total was 11. They were, however, unable to stop Victor going ahead with her book, Goddess.

'I had too much evidence, paperwork and too many interviews for them to keep it quiet,' Victor tells me.

She claims the first pregnancy Madonna terminated came during an affair with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in the Eighties. The relationship ended as Madonna had been seeing other men and also did not want to stay with Basquiat as he descended into heroin addiction.

Victor asserts that there were further abortions when she was with producer and songwriter Jellybean Benitez. Another was in 1990 when she was seeing Tony Ward, a bisexual model who starred in her Justify My Love video.

Some say she was told there were abnormalities with the foetus, others that she felt Ward, who was not faithful to her, was not father material.

In either case, with regret, she seems to have terminated the pregnancy. This was her wild period, and when she produced the book Sex in 1992, she said: 'It was my own personal rebellion against my father, against the way I was raised, against culture, against society, against everything.'

However, she decided at the end of 1993 that she wanted to become a mother. She fixed on Denis Rodman, the bad-boy basketball player. In his book, Rodman said Madonna told him that she wanted him to father her child - but was frustrated that his schedule did not coincide with her ovulation. They split after only a few months.

In the autumn of 1994 she met Carlos Leon, an aspiring actor. Their relationship was on the rocks by the end of 1995 and she changed the locks at her New York apartment.

However, early the following year she fell pregnant by him, and delivered Lourdes on October 14, 1996.

For Madonna, who lost her mother at six, there was overwhelming joy. She told Vanity Fair: 'I knew that having a child would be an incredible healing experience... because I didn't have a mother, I just knew my karma was to have a girl.'

She and Carlos remain on reasonable terms. After Lourdes' birth, she said she would like another child, but 'would need to be in a stable relationship'.

She even told an interviewer that she was haunted by the terminations she had undergone. 'You always have regrets when you make those kinds of decisions, but you have to look at your lifestyle and ask yourself: "Am I at a place in my life where I can devote a lot of time to being the really good parent I want to be?"

However, there appears to have been a final abortion when she was 39 and pregnant by penniless British film runner Andy Bird. In an interview, he said: 'I don't think she was sure how she felt. She was experiencing the same turmoil I was.'

In the following year, 1998, she met Guy Ritchie, and had Rocco, her final biological baby, in August 2000.

It was not an easy nine months, and she once declared that: 'pregnancy is a big joke God played on women.'

Sadly, it seems that the famously humourless Madonna didn't want to be the butt of the joke too often.

Beauty summed up: To tell if a woman's really attractive, it's all in the figures

Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. But it is actually far less subjective than that, research suggests.

A woman's attractiveness relates to the size of her waist compared with her hips, it has been found.

Scientists have discovered the ratio which, they say, makes for the perfect figure.

Kate Moss
Jessica Alba

Beauty summed up: Supermodel Kate Moss, left, and actress Jessica Alba have the perfect 0.7 waist-to-hip ratio

New Zealand anthropologist Barnaby Dixson set out to find what makes a woman attractive to men.

A group of volunteers were presented with various pictures of a woman in which her bust, waist and hips had been digitally altered and asked to rate the image for attractiveness. Infra-red cameras tracked their eyes as they looked at the photos.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR WAIST-TO-HIP RATIO

Marilyn Monroe

1. Stand with your stomach relaxed

2. Find the narrowest point of your waist and measure in inches

3. Find the widest point of your hips and measure in inches

4. Divide the measurement from step 2 by the measurement from step 3. This is your waist-to-hip ratio

Although most were initially drawn to the woman's cleavage, her hips and waist were key to attraction.

A waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7 - or a waist measurement exactly 70 per cent of the hip circumference - scored the highest marks.

Examples include some of the world's most beautiful women. Marilyn Monroe, modern-day starlet Jessica Alba and Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio all possess the perfect figure.

As does Kate Moss, despite her apparent lack of curves. And the attractiveness of the hourglass figure holds true across countries and cultures, research shows.

Studies show that men in the UK, Cameroon, Germany and China, agree with those polled in New Zealand.

History tells a similar story, said Dr Dixson, of Victoria University of Wellington.

It is thought that a small waist-to-hip ratio is equated in the mind with good health and high fertility.

Dr Dixson said: 'It is likely that perfect 0.7 ratio sends a biological signal to men that that woman is most fertile and most likely to produce a healthy offspring, no matter what size that woman is.

'It is all about the distribution of fat which is directly linked to fertility.' His views chime with German research released last year. The University of Regensburg study found an hourglass figure to be more attractive than even athletic types or long-legged, bigchested 'Barbies'.

As for what women want, Dr Dixson said that men were wasting their time pumping iron in the gym as women invariably preferred a leaner, less muscle-bound physique.

'On a biological level, women are more likely to pick a leaner, even slightly more effeminate man as they equate those physical traits with being more caring and gentle and therefore a better prospect as a partner.'

He added: 'Humans simply do not mate randomly.'

John has been suggesting the exes reunite since they all entered the Big Brother house on Tuesday night.

When he brought up the idea yet again on Wednesday, Preston, 26, said: 'I don't think that's entirely appropriate.'

As John and Preston laughed, the former Ordinary Boys stopped when he saw Chantelle didn't find it funny.

Makosi told John to stop 'out of respect for Preston's girlfriend'.

Not tonight dear, we're married: Trying the knot is BAD for your sex life as lovemaking wanes to just once a week

Sexual tension: A third polled no longer fancy their partner as much as they did in the early days, with 43 per cent claiming their loved one has let themselves go

It's official, marriage is bad for your sex life, a study has revealed.

Researchers found before walking down the aisle, couples can expect to have sex more than four times a week.

But after three years of life as man and wife most couples are lucky to have sex just once every seven days.

It also emerged six out of ten couples believe marriage has completely ruined the excitement of having sex.

Astonishingly, just under half of all married people say their relationship with their partner is more like friends than lovers.

A spokesman for extra-marital dating service www.lovinglinks.co.uk, which conducted the poll of 3,000 married people, said: 'Unfortunately, while you can be deeply in love with someone and want to spend the rest of your life with them, it is also possible to want more from the relationship.

'A partner might be supportive, funny, intelligent, and kind, but if they don't inspire confidence in the bedroom, or don't meet expectations sexually life can be frustrating.

'And it is at times like this when eyes start to wander, and folk start to think about having a no-strings affair with someone else.

'After 14 years of providing a service where married people can look for sex elsewhere, we have good reason to believe many relationships are strengthened by a little out-of-marriage activity.'

The poll shows 59 per cent of couples believe their sex life has worsened since marriage because they no longer make an effort with each other any more.

And a third no longer fancy their partner as much as they did in the early days, with 43 per cent claiming their loved one has let themselves go.

Unfortunately, eight in ten couples are in a bit of a sexual rut - having sex at the same time, in the same place and in the same positions every time they sleep together.

In fact, 79 per cent of people are happier getting a good night's sleep than making the effort to have spontaneous sex in the middle of the night.

But when it comes to having an affair, two thirds of those who have dabbled admit the sex was mind-blowing compared to the once-a-week missionary with their husband or wife.

And even a fifth of those who haven't yet played away from home would have a one night stand if the opportunity presented itself or if their sex life with their partner doesn't improve.

The same percentage even said they would understand if their partner suddenly confessed to sleeping with someone else.

Unsurprisingly, a quarter of those polled admit to having had a one night stand to satisfy their craving for good sex.

And 14 per cent have even embarked on a hot blooded affair.

The Loving Links spokesman added: 'Modern marriages are becoming a little more open where sex is concerned, and these days we are quicker to forgive if someone has a little one night stand.

'It is never nice to learn that our partners aren't satisfied in the bedroom department, but if sleeping with someone else spurs couples on to make more of an effort with each other that can only be a good thing.'

Two thirds of couples blame their hectic lifestyle for their terrible sex life, and 80 per cent are often too tired to bother once the day is over.

Seven in ten people reckon they might be inclined make love more if their partner made more of an effort romantically.

Ex-wife of Tiger Woods breaks silence

Main Image
Elin Nordegren spoke to People magazine in an interview published on Wednesday, two days after she and Woods issued a statement confirming their divorce, which had been widely anticipated for months after his public confession of infidelity.

"I've been through hell," the Swedish-born former nanny told the publication. "It's hard to think you have this life, and then all of a sudden -- was it a lie? You're struggling because it wasn't real. But I survived, it was hard, but it didn't kill me."

Nordegren, 30, who met Woods at the age of 21 while minding children for a Swedish golfer but is now studying psychology, said she never suspected the affairs that Woods, reputed to be the world's wealthiest sports star, admitted to and publicly apologized for in February.

"I'm so embarrassed that I never suspected -- not a one. For the last three and a half years, when all this was going on, I was home a lot more with pregnancies, then the children and my school," she said.

When asked about his ex-wife's comments, Woods told reporters on Wednesday after playing a golf event in New Jersey that he "wished her the best in everything."

"It's a sad time in our lives. And we're looking forward to -- in our lives and how we can help our kids the best way we possibly can. And that's the most important thing," he said.

Nordegren said she has "not watched one minute of golf" since the revelations.

FAMILY TORN APART

Woods, who has won 14 major championships, returned to the game in April after losing up to $35 million in sponsorship revenue as his private life unraveled over allegations that surfaced in late November and December about affairs between him and several women.

The revelations surfaced after a middle-of-the-night car accident at the couple's luxury Florida home where Woods crashed into a tree and a fire hydrant. Nordegren told police she smashed the car's back window with a golf club to get him out.

Nordegren told People that she did not hit Woods on the night of the car crash.

"There was never any violence inside or outside our home," she said. "The speculation that I would have used a golf club to hit him is just truly ridiculous."

Since then Nordegren said she has experienced various emotions. Woods and Nordegren share custody of a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.

"The word betrayal isn't strong enough. I felt like my whole world had fallen apart," she said, before later adding, "I have been through the stages of disbelief and shock, to anger and ultimately grief over the loss of the family I so badly wanted for my children."

Of the settlement she received, which neither she nor Woods have disclosed but People estimated to be worth $100 million, she said it wasn't worth splitting up her family.

"Money can't buy me happiness," she said. "Or put my family back together."

Praised for maintaining her privacy through the ordeal, Nordegren, who disclosed she suffered weight and hair loss from stress before the divorce, said she wanted to protect her children.

"For my kids, I felt that (maintaining privacy) was the only normalcy I could give them, since they have a very famous dad," she said.

She conducted the interview over four visits lasting a total of 19 hours at the rented Windermere, Fla., home where she now lives with their two children.

The magazine said Nordegren had approached the publication to tell her side of the story and a spokeswoman said no one had been paid for the article.

"I felt like setting some things straight," Nordegren said in the article.

She and Woods tried for "months and months" to reconcile, she added, but "without trust and love" it wasn't possible. She will relocate to southern Florida so that her children can be close to their father.

"Forgiveness takes time," she said.

Deilhi under the siege of floods and traffic jams

Deilhi under the siege of floods and traffic jams

The gushing water of Yamuna in the capital been flowing above the danger level and has entered ISBT. Also, many parts of the capital are witnessing long traffic jams due to rain.

The situation seems to be worsening with the release of water from Hathini Kund in Haryana and relentless heavy rain.

The water level in the Yamuna rose to 205.23 metres, 40 cm above the danger level. Meanwhile, 34,600 cusecs of water was released from Hathini Kund barrage upstream in Haryana threatening to inundate more areas on the river banks in the city.

People living close to the river have been shifted to safer areas. The overflowing Yamuna has submerged parts of adjoining areas like Madanpur Khadar, Jaitpur and Usmanpur, prompting authorities to shift people from some of these low-lying areas.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also deployed patrolling boats to facilitate the rescue operation.

An official of NDRF`s said that they have around 70 specialised NDRF personnel. “Our base camp is at the Boat Club and one is at Sonia Vihar. Nine boats are on duty and 72 boats have been put on standby." Large areas of Usmanpur are also inundated. The city administration has set up camps to provide shelter to the people affected by flood and arrangements for medical and food facilities have been made.

The rise in water level has particularly affected people who depend on agriculture. Floodwater has destroyed not just their houses, but also their crops and vegetables, adding to their worries. A senior official of Delhi government fears that the situation may worsen as the meteorology department has predicted more rains in the next few days.

Hitler was descended from the Jews and Africans

Hitler was descended from the Jews and Africans

Perhaps world most hated leader Adolf Hitler was probably descended from Jewish people and North Africans.

Adolf Hitler is likely to have been descended from both Jews and Africans, according to DNA tests. Samples taken from relatives of the Nazi leader show that he is biologically linked to the `sub-human` races he sought to exterminate.

Journalist Jean-Paul Mulders and historian Marc Vermeeren used DNA to track down 39 of the Fuhrer`s relatives earlier this year. They included an Austrian farmer revealed only as a cousin called Norbert H.A Belgian news magazine has reported that samples of saliva taken from these people strongly suggest Hitler had antecedents he certainly would not have cared for.

A London daily `Daily Mail` reports that a chromosome called Haplopgroup E1b1b (Y-DNA) is rare in Germany and indeed Western Europe.`It is most commonly found in the Berbers of Morocco, in Algeria, Libya and Tunisia as well as among Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews,` Mr Vermeeren said. Historian A.Deshpande says that Hitler would be turning in his grave to hear that his descended from the Jews and Africans.

Haplogroup E1b1b1, which accounts for approximately 18 to 20 per cent of Ashkenazi and 8.6 per cent to 30 per cent of Sephardic Y-chromosomes, appears to be one of the major founding lineages of the Jewish population. `This is a surprising result,` said Ronny Decorte, a genetic specialist who agreed that Hitler probably did have some roots in North Africa.

Nuclear Liability bill tabled in parliament

Nuclear Liability bill tabled in parliament

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prithviraj Chavan today has tabled the controversial Nuclear Liability. It is likely to be passed as government has agreed to drop the intent clause which says that the nuclear suppliers are only liable if they intend to cause nuclear damage.

There was intense debate and speculation over as to how will the suppliers of nuclear equipment be liable to pay up if there is a nuclear disaster.

With India likely to order over two dozen nuclear plants, the world waits eagerly to see what condition India sets as it will set the standard for the rest of the world in the future.

Earlier, the opposition parties rejected the earlier version because it said that suppliers will not be liable unless the supplier signs a special agreement with the operator in India which makes the supplier liable.

The Opposition says most suppliers won`t sign any special one-to-one agreement and therefore they will escape any liability.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prithviraj Chavan in an earlier interview said, "The Opposition has raised valid objections."

There is also confusion over whether there is any cap on liability for suppliers. While the bill doesn`t mention any, legal experts say that in effect the Rs1,500 crore cap on operators will be the cap on suppliers, as only the operator can ask the supplier to pay damages and the operator cannot ask for more than their own cap of Rs1,500 crore.

How to turn a female friend into a girlfriend

How to turn a female friend into a girlfriend

If you want to know how to turn a `just friend` into a `girlfriend`, ask our Bollywood stars. They claim to be just friends but in no time you`ll see them in each others arms, dating, kissing and what not. Well, that`s the tale of our film stars, but as a commoner, it`s not that easy to woo a female friend and turn her into your girlfriend. Extra care and extra efforts are needed to make her fall in love with you.

1. Get to know her: It is not uncommon to find yourself in a situation where you like a girl as more than a friend, but she just likes you as a friend. In some cases there is nothing you can do about this; however, if you can sow the seeds of erotic thought, without actually taking drastic or direct action, you may well find her becoming more attracted to you.

2. Be more flirtatious: The problem often lies in being nice, as many people are. This will give an impression that you are a great friend, but not a great lover. So you really need to flirt more. And if you don`t think you are any good at flirting -- don`t worry! Flirting is, and should be, playful and fun.

Says Ankur Jaiswal, 24, who turned his friend into his lover, “Man it`s damn difficult, you need hard work and extra efforts to do that. Well, one thing that I`ve noticed is that girls love guys` sense of humour.”

3. Be playful: Joke around, be more playful, spend more time looking into their eyes or glancing at them "cutely" or "suggestively".

4. Make physical contact: Do it three times every time you meet up with her. Each time you do, it should be about 2-3 seconds, somewhere like their hand, shoulder, or anywhere that`s not too uncomfortable.

5. Don`t spend too much time around her: Instead, spend lots of time, and then none for a while, then more again, and flirt while you are there. While you are gone, she is given a chance to think about you, which hopefully she will.

6. Be presentable: Take care of your appearance. Make sure you look good and don`t smell bad.

7. Stand up for her if she needs it: Do things for her, like help her out whenever you can, but spend more time with her when she is happy than when she is sad. This helps her to associate happiness with you. If you are successful in making her your girlfriend, that`s when it becomes important to support her when she needs it.

8. Listen to her: Don`t just sit there and nod your head pretending to listen. Girls love it when you listen and take the time to truly understand them. Not only that, but listening will benefit the potential future relationship and also strengthen your current friendship.

9. Lean your shoulders towards her, girls often like it. But be careful, don`t tend to fall on her.

Says a sad Prince Khanna, 26, “well, I had a bad experience. I tried to woo my female friend but failed to do so. I think when you are in love with someone, you must have a direct approach and you must tell her about your feelings as soon as possible. I was late in doing so and as a result, it was too late and she got married to someone else.”
